Mumbai, Sep 25: Shares of the National Stock Exchange of India Ltd (NSE) moved lower in Friday’s trade, a day after the exchange made its long-awaited debut on the stock market.
The stock touched an intraday low of Rs 1,790 on the BSE before trading around Rs 1,808, down 0.56 per cent. The movement came after a relatively quiet debut on Thursday, when NSE shares listed at Rs 1,800, a 0.84 per cent premium to the IPO issue price of Rs 1,785.
On its first trading day, the stock moved as high as Rs 1,878 before ending at Rs 1,817, about 1.8 per cent above the issue price. This made Friday’s session the first test of the stock’s price movement after the initial listing-day activity.
NSE enters the listed-company space
The exchange’s listing followed one of India’s biggest IPOs. The Rs 22,568-crore issue was open from September 17 to September 21 and received bids for 50.58 crore shares against 8.86 crore shares on offer.
The issue was subscribed 5.71 times, with qualified institutional buyers showing the strongest demand at 12.68 times their allocated portion. The retail portion was subscribed 1.39 times, while the non-institutional category was subscribed 6.55 times.
The IPO was entirely an offer for sale, meaning the proceeds went to existing shareholders rather than being raised as fresh capital by the exchange.
Market value crosses Rs 4.4 lakh crore
Following the listing, NSE entered the group of India’s largest listed companies by market capitalisation. Its market value stood at around Rs 4.49 lakh crore at the close of the first trading session, according to market data reported after the debut.
The listing also gives public-market investors direct exposure to one of India's key market infrastructure institutions. NSE has a dominant position in India's equity and derivatives markets, although its earnings remain closely linked to trading activity and regulatory developments.
Trading activity remains a key factor
Transaction-related income remains an important part of NSE's business. This makes trading volumes, market participation and changes in regulations important factors for investors tracking the stock.
The exchange has also been working to expand its technology and investor-facing services. NSE Managing Director and CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan has said the exchange is developing a mobile-first framework aimed at bringing trading data, portfolio information and analytics together on a single platform.
For the broader market, the NSE listing is significant because one of India's most important financial-market institutions is now part of the listed equity universe.
The focus now shifts from the excitement around the IPO and debut to how the stock performs as regular market trading develops and investors assess the exchange’s earnings, trading volumes, technology investments and future growth opportunities.
